S1000D Explained: Data Modules, CSDB, BREX and Implementation
S1000D is a modular technical-publication specification. It separates technical information into identifiable Data Modules, manages them in a Common Source Database, and assembles controlled deliverables for different products and configurations.
What does S1000D define?
S1000D defines a structured way to create, manage, reuse, validate and publish technical information. A project normally combines a DMRL, a System Breakdown Structure or SNS, Data Module Codes, business rules, a CSDB and a Publication Module. The exact fields and allowed values depend on the adopted Issue, schemas and project rules.
| Concept | Project role |
|---|---|
| Data Module (DM) | A separately managed unit of technical information, such as a description, procedure, fault-isolation task or parts entry. |
| DMC | The structured identity of a Data Module. It connects the module to a model, system, information type and project-defined variation. |
| CSDB | The source-data environment that manages objects, versions, states, references, rules, approvals and publication readiness. |
| BREX and business rules | Project constraints that complement Schema validation with permitted values, coding rules and content checks. |
| PM and applicability | Publication structure and configuration logic used to assemble the right content for a product or customer. |
A practical implementation sequence
- Confirm the adopted S1000D Issue, scope, deliverables and configuration boundaries.
- Define the SNS, DMC rules, code lists, terminology, media policy and business rules.
- Create the DMRL and a small set of representative Data Modules.
- Validate structure, coding, references, media, applicability and technical content.
- Organize approved modules in a PM and produce PDF, IETP or another agreed delivery package.
- Keep approval evidence, version history and change impact records for acceptance.

What is the core idea of S1000D?
S1000D manages technical information as identifiable and reusable Data Modules, then combines them through a CSDB and publication structure.
Can this guide replace the S1000D specification?
No. Field definitions, allowed values and compliance requirements must be checked against the adopted Issue, schemas, data dictionaries and project business rules.
