S1000D DMC: Data Module Code Fields and Coding Rules

The Data Module Code (DMC) is a structured identity, not an arbitrary file name. It helps a CSDB distinguish, reference, version and publish the correct module.

Prepared by Beijing Zhongzi Technology Co., Ltd. · Updated 2026-10-19 · Reading and planning guidance, not a replacement for the formal standard.

Which fields are commonly involved?

Field familyTypical meaningControl point
Model identificationProduct or model scope.Match the approved model and configuration list.
System and SNS codesSystem, subsystem and lower-level breakdown.Map the codes to the approved system breakdown.
Assembly and disassembly codesAssembly, disassembly and variation context.Keep component hierarchy and variation rules stable.
Information codesInformation type and its variation.Use controlled code lists and explain exceptions.
Location and project differencesObject position or project-defined difference.Do not use temporary revision numbers as stable identity fields.

How should a project govern DMC rules?

  1. Define field ownership, code lists and approval responsibilities.
  2. Map DMC fields to the SNS and DMRL.
  3. Record prohibited combinations and exceptions in business rules.
  4. Trial the scheme with description, procedure, parts and fault-isolation modules.
  5. Keep mappings between DMCs, file names, legacy identifiers and publication references.

Common mistakes

See the Data Modules and CSDB guides for the surrounding controls.

Scope note: Exact field order, lengths, values and mandatory attributes must be verified against the adopted S1000D Issue and project rules.

Frequently asked questions

Is a DMC the same as a file path?

No. A DMC identifies the Data Module; a project may map it to a file name or storage path without changing its meaning.

Can a project invent any DMC format?

Only within the boundaries allowed by the adopted Issue, schemas, data dictionary, business rules and contract.
